Freelance Developers, Backed by a Contract
Freelance flexibility, without the freelance risk.
Hiring a freelance developer usually looks like the fastest and cheapest option, right up until the person stops replying. CodeOrigins has offered the middle path since 2022: the same flexible, task-sized approach you would get from a freelancer, but with a signed contract, documented code and a team that does not vanish mid-project.
You are not paying for a whole agency. You pay for hours or for a defined result, exactly as you would with a freelancer. The difference is that a company stands behind the work rather than one person and their current mood.
What the contract actually covers
The three most common freelance stories are deadlines that keep sliding, projects abandoned halfway, and code nobody else can touch. Our contract fixes the scope, the deadline, the acceptance criteria and your exclusive ownership of the source code. Payment runs through proper invoicing, which matters to your accountant. If we miss a deadline, that is our liability to absorb, not a problem you inherit. You also get an NDA before we see anything sensitive.
What happens if the developer leaves
This is the expensive freelance risk: one person walks away and the project stops. Every project we run lives in a company Git repository with recorded environment setup and technical notes. A second engineer reviews the code, so at least two people always know your project. If we need to swap a specialist, the replacement is up to speed in two to three days, and you are not billed for that ramp-up time. Continuity is a process here, not a favour.
How pricing works
For small, clearly defined work such as a bug fix, a new page or an integration, we quote a fixed price per task. When the scope cannot be pinned down in advance, we bill hourly and send a monthly breakdown showing which hours went to which task. There is no large minimum commitment: you can start with a ten-hour package and scale up if the collaboration works. Rates stay close to freelance levels because you are not funding layers of management you do not need.
When this is the right choice
This format works best when you do not need a full team. Typical cases: improving a live website, finishing a project somebody else started, repairing a broken integration, performance optimisation, or assembling an MVP in one to two months. A large share of the companies that come to us have already tried a freelancer and been left with a half-finished result. In that case we start with an audit of the inherited code and tell you honestly whether it is worth continuing or rewriting.
How we work
Define the task
We discuss the work and review any existing code. This costs nothing and takes a day or two.
Estimate and contract
You get an hour estimate broken down by task, then we sign the contract and an NDA if you need one.
Work in short sprints
We work in short cycles and show a working result at the end of each one. Every task is visible to you throughout.
Handover and support
We transfer the code to your repository along with all access credentials, and fix any defects found after handover at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this better than a freelancer on Upwork?
With a freelancer you are trusting one individual. With us you get a contract, a second engineer reviewing the code, and cover if someone is ill or leaves. The project keeps moving without a pause and without extra cost on your side.
Are your rates much higher than a freelancer?
On small tasks the gap is narrow, because you are not funding an unnecessary management layer. Either way you receive the estimate up front, broken down by hours, so you can compare before committing to anything.
Can I hire just a few hours of work?
Yes. The minimum package is ten hours, which is enough for a bug fix, a small feature or a technical audit. Unused hours roll over to the next month for up to three months.
Who owns the code?
You do, entirely, and it is written into the contract. During development the code sits in your Git repository, or is transferred to you at handover together with deployment instructions and every access credential involved.
Will you take over a project someone else started?
Yes, but we run a code audit first, usually three to five working days. After that you get an honest estimate of what continuing will cost and whether some parts are better rewritten than patched.
How do I keep track of the work?
Tasks are managed in an issue tracker where you can see the status of every item. You receive a short weekly report, and on hourly engagements a detailed log of the time spent on each task.
